The history of the site, local customs, and what makes a stay at Anjajavy unique.
It was while exploring the most remote lands of Madagascar that Dominique Prat discovered the Anjajavy peninsula and decided, in 2000, to establish the Lodge there on 15 hectares, with an integrated ecotourism vision to preserve this unique place. In 2010, the Rajabali family took over this adventure with the desire to perpetuate this heritage while giving it a profoundly human dimension. Convinced that the preservation of nature is inseparable from the well-being of local communities, they strengthen ties with the surrounding villages and develop projects based on listening, trust, and sharing. This shared commitment led to the creation of an official Protected Area in 2017, established by a government decree in April 2018, illustrating a vision where biodiversity conservation and community development go hand in hand.
Yes. Anjajavy le Lodge has been a member of the Relais & Châteaux association since 2004 and is classified, according to European standards, as a superior 4-star establishment. Anjajavy is a remote location where mobile phone coverage is limited. The Lodge uses a satellite connection to provide phone and internet service throughout the property. Guests can use the Lodge's telephone if needed.
Yes, Wi-Fi is available in both the main Lodge building and each villa via the property's satellite connection.
The internet connection, provided via satellite, offers a maximum speed of 1 Mbps shared among all Lodge guests. Due to technical reasons beyond our control, it may be interrupted or slowed down, sometimes for extended periods. We therefore recommend avoiding video streaming as much as possible and disabling automatic updates on your connected devices, as even a simple download can disrupt the connection for the entire Lodge.
Given its secluded location and the technical limitations of its satellite connection, Anjajavy le Lodge is ideal for a digital detox, while still providing backup Wi-Fi access for essential needs. A satellite television with a selection of channels is available in the lounge for guests who wish to stay informed.
All villas have 220V power outlets with European-style sockets. We recommend that travelers coming from countries using a different electrical standard bring an adapter before their departure.

Wildlife
Lemurs, birds, fossas, tortoises, and endemic baobabs: what the reserve reveals, season after season.
Several lemur species coexist in the reserve and are easily observed in their natural environment. The most iconic are Coquerel's sifakas, an endemic species of northwestern Madagascar known for its acrobatic agility, which roam alongside other diurnal and nocturnal lemurs in the gardens and forests surrounding the lodge.

Inventories have recorded more than 134 distinct bird species in Anjajavy, making it an internationally recognized destination for ornithologists and birdwatchers. The site is home to the Madagascar Fish Eagle (Haliaeetus vociferoides), the Great Crested Ibis (Lophotibis cristata), and the Madagascar Sacred Ibis (Threskiornis bernieri), three of the most sought-after species for enthusiasts.
The fossa (Cryptoprocta ferox) is present in the Anjajavy Protected Area, but it is a discreet and shy animal, equally at home on the ground and in the canopy. Its elusive nature makes it a rarer sighting than that of lemurs or birds. A Nature Festival is organized every year to raise awareness among local residents about its protection.
Anjajavy's tropical climate supports around forty species of reptiles and amphibians, including colorful geckos and chameleons. Sea turtles regularly come to lay their eggs on the peninsula's beaches, offering a spectacular sight: the hatchlings emerging and racing towards the sea. The Protected Area is also home to mammal species such as the fossa, as well as tenrecs, Madagascar's smallest mammals, related to hedgehogs. Finally, four of Madagascar's six endemic baobab species can be found in a single location here in Anjajavy: the red baobab (Adansonia fony), the gray baobab (Adansonia madagascarensis), the African baobab (Adansonia digitata), and Grandidier's baobab (Adansonia grandidieri).
Yes, several programs are underway. Anjajavy was chosen for the very first reintroduction of giant tortoises (Aldabrachelys gigantea) in Madagascar, in partnership with a conservation biologist and the Malagasy government. A reintroduction program for the aye-aye lemur, conducted with the University of Antananarivo and the University of Omaha (USA), also resulted in the reintroduction of a female and her daughter to the Protected Area in 2018.
Each season reveals a unique facet of Anjajavy's beauty:

- Rainy season (November to April): The forest is lush and intensely green, offering a spectacular and vibrant landscape. This is a particularly rich period for biodiversity, with the observation of numerous reptile and amphibian species, as well as the emergence of species from their dormant period. Migratory birds are also more numerous, further enriching the birdwatching experience. It is also during this period that sea turtles come to lay their eggs on the peninsula's beaches, offering a unique seasonal spectacle.
- Dry season (May to October): generally the most favorable time to explore the forest and observe lemurs, birds, and reptiles in good conditions, as the trails are more accessible and the animals easier to spot. The skies are clear and conducive to stargazing. Conditions are more pleasant, with mild temperatures and steady winds. Wildlife, especially nocturnal animals, is more easily observed. It is also an ideal time for marine activities such as snorkeling. Finally, lemur births can be observed from July and August onwards, a particularly highlight of the season.

Sustainability
Anti-plastic policy, reforestation, and a direct link between each stay and the preservation of the reserve.
Anjajavy implements an anti-plastic policy across the entire site: no plastic straws in cocktails, biodegradable cotton swabs in the villas, and cleaning products delivered in bulk by traditional sailing canoe to minimize packaging. Residual plastic waste is transformed into reusable building bricks rather than being discarded into the environment. All villas are also equipped with solar water heaters, ensuring energy independence with zero CO2 emissions.
The lodge supports several active conservation programs: the first reintroduction of giant tortoises in Madagascar, a reintroduction program for the aye-aye lemur conducted in partnership with Malagasy and American universities, and a compensation fund helping villagers coexist with the fossa (notably through the construction of protected chicken coops). Since 2009, more than 350,000 native trees have been replanted in eroded areas of the Protected Area.
The Chef and local suppliers are committed to ethical cuisine, using seasonal and organic products sourced directly from local fishermen, farmers, and producers, with the aim of reducing their environmental impact and supporting the regional economy.
Yes: On December 6, 2024, Anjajavy le Lodge received the Sustainability Trophy, awarded by the Relais & Châteaux association and the Duval-Leroy Champagne house. This award recognizes, in particular, the partnership established with the Duke Lemur Center (Duke University, North Carolina), which led to the creation of a forest research center dedicated to lemurs, including the ring-tailed lemur, the only primate in the world known to hibernate.

Yes, substantially. Since its inception, Anjajavy the Lodge has financed local entrepreneurship (boat transport, traditional fishing, beekeeping, market gardening) through microloans in the four villages of the Protected Area. The lodge has also funded the construction of a secondary school and a library with 1,000 books, distributes school kits each year, and organizes educational visits for students on the themes of biodiversity and sustainable resource management. All staff members have been Malagasy since the lodge opened in 2000.

Anjajavy le Lodge is not accessible by road: the peninsula, isolated in the heart of a nature reserve, can only be reached by air. Flights are operated by Madagascar Trans Air (MTA), the lodge's preferred partner for this destination, which offers a high-end private aviation service guaranteeing comfort and safety.

Private flights can be arranged from Madagascar's main airports and airstrips, offering flexible access from across the country as well as from several regional airstrips.
Upon arrival, guests are greeted by the lodge team as soon as they disembark and then transferred by car to the Anjajavy Reserve. This transfer marks the beginning of the immersive experience, with a gradual transition to a pristine and exclusive natural environment.

The flight between Antananarivo and Anjajavy takes approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes. From Nosy Be, it's about a 1-hour flight, and from Majunga, it's about 40 minutes by plane. Upon arrival, guests are greeted directly on the lodge's private airstrip and then transferred by car through the forest to the property.
For safety reasons, the airline applies specific baggage restrictions, in accordance with current regulations. Suitcases should ideally be soft-sided and compact, with a maximum weight of 20 kg per person, including carry-on baggage, with no possibility of excess baggage allowance. Dimensions must not exceed 140 cm (length, width, and depth).

Anjajavy enjoys the warm climate of Madagascar's northwest coast, with high temperatures year-round. The dry season generally extends from April to mid-November, offering abundant sunshine and ideal conditions for excursions in the forest and at sea. The rainy season, from mid-November to mid-March, is hotter and more humid, with heavier rainfall on this northwestern coast exposed to the monsoon. Following this seasonal pattern, the lodge typically closes between mid-January and mid-March to allow for site regeneration and preparation for the following season.The months between the end of the dry season and the beginning of the rainy season (around April-May and September-November) are generally considered the most comfortable time to visit, combining pleasant warmth with a reduced risk of rainfall.

Yes. The lodge has opened a clinic on the premises, where a doctor and a midwife are employed full-time. This clinic serves not only the needs of the lodge but also medical emergencies in the four villages bordering the Protected Area.
Since 2016, the Anjajavy medical team has conducted annual malaria prophylaxis campaigns for local populations, as well as weekly awareness sessions on family planning, contraception, and hygiene.
The prevalence of malaria on the Anjajavy peninsula is low. However, antimalarial treatment is recommended throughout Madagascar. It is essential to consult a doctor or an international vaccination center before departure. They will be able to take into account your health, the length of your stay, and the current health recommendations for Madagascar.

Your booking is confirmed upon payment of a non-refundable deposit of 20% of the total amount, payable within 15 days of receiving your pro forma invoice. The remaining 80% is due at least 30 days before your arrival. Payment is made by bank transfer, with transfer fees borne by the sender; Visa International and Mastercard are also accepted locally. Please note: if the deposit is not received within the specified timeframe, Anjajavy le Lodge reserves the right to cancel the reservation at any time.
A deposit of 20% of the total amount of your invoice (including accommodation and air transfers) is non-refundable in case of cancellation, regardless of the date. Beyond this deposit, additional penalties apply depending on the time before your arrival: 50% of the total amount for cancellations made between 29 and 10 days before arrival, and 100% of the total amount for cancellations made less than 10 days before arrival. The lodge features 24 villas crafted from fine wood, each with an 18 m² terrace overlooking the sea, a living area, and a bedroom on the ground floor. Booking the Lodge exclusively is possible for groups of up to 18 villas, depending on the season. This type of stay must be booked well in advance to ensure exclusive reservation of all villas. As other guests may book for the same period, it is essential to confirm as soon as possible: the Lodge cannot refuse other guests' reservations based on a simple option; only confirmation through payment of a non-refundable deposit guarantees exclusive use. The confirmation and cancellation conditions applicable to exclusive bookings are specific and differ from those of a standard reservation. The Lodge is not open year-round: Anjajavy le Lodge closes every year from mid-January to mid-March, coinciding with the cyclone season on the northwest coast of Madagascar. This closure period also allows us to preserve the site and prepare for the following season.
